How were the year’s most beautiful costumes made? According to the designers behind them, vintage fashion archives, period-appropriate dyes, and incredible amounts of research. There were a lot of creative workarounds required too. “When you think of Billie Holiday, you automatically think of the gardenias in the hair,” says Paolo Nieddu, who re-created the jazz singer’s look for #TheUnitedStatesVsBillieHoliday. While filming, however, gardenias were not in season. “We used some synthetic ones made from silk."

In #Emma, Oscar-winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne wanted the world to revolve around the titular character. That meant using vegetable dyes to create vivid marigolds, burnt oranges, and crushed raspberries to show the different seasons through her wardrobe. And #Ammonite, according to Oscar-winner Michael O’Connor, played with color in its own way. “The idea was to always reflect the sea with [Saoirse Ronan] in the patterns of her dresses.” That meant a lot of blue and green tones, and as her and Kate Winslet’s characters grew closer, O’Connor depicted the bond by “merging” their aesthetics.
