Part 2: my story with ED

At 17 years old I graduated from high school and departed for Europe the very next day to go climb outside + compete on the World Cup circuit for 2.5 months. It was magical ; I camped on the beach in Barcelona, in the mountains of northern Italy, and rented a room in Chamonix & Madrid while I explored the cities, climbed on rock and in the gyms and competed at the world stage. I didn’t perform very well in the world cups at the time - and my excuse was that perhaps I wasn’t small enough like the rest of the competitors and those I looked up to.

At the end of it all I went home, started college, began my first coaching dig as a Head Coach of a youth team, and decided to really dedicate my extra time, energy + resources into training for my final year of youth competitions in hopes to compete at the Youth World Championship + reach my goals for the adult competition series, too. First on my list was to get smaller so that I could get stronger (my backward thinking).

I started imposing rules on myself around what I could eat and when I would allow myself to eat. I would never eat past 7pm regardless of feeling hungry. I stopped eating anything with hydrogenated oils, I avoided any type of food on the airplane that was processed, and definitely never ever ate fast food. I didn’t eat anything white either; sauces, processed items, pasta, etc. To say that I was always in a constant state of hunger is maybe an understatement.

I began to be obsessive with exercising too. I had to do core, lunges, and glute work every-single-night before bed regardless if I had already trained that day or spent the whole day climbing outside. I would wake up at 4am every morning to swim before my 8am class began. I would follow up classes with climbing training at the gym for about 3 hours. After climbing I would run - something my boyfriend at the time advocated for so as to “bring my calves up higher + give me better legs.” What a great boyfriend.

I was young so was relatively un-phased about depleting my body of what it needed; and was relieved to not have a cycle anymore too. “Bonus!”
