With its unique body shape and coloration resembling an ice cream sherbet, there’s no denying that the wartyskin frogfish is one interesting sea creature. Using its modified front fins, this fish can actually crawl across the ocean floor, aided by its gills which function like little propellers. Carnivorous in nature, this tropical fish is an ambush hunter that spends much of its time lying in wait. Once a frogfish has found the perfect place to hide, it changes its coloring to better blend into its surroundings. From there, it deploys its “lure” – a modified spine whose top resembles a small shrimp or fish – and wiggles it around. As curious fish and crustaceans venture close to inspect the lure the frogfish sucks in its unsuspecting prey with a large gulp!
